    November 29, 1913:

The father of sixteen children, a coal miner, considers himself the richest man in the world. He is Peter Gorius, 49 and stalwart, who lives in Navarre, pays his debts, works his little garden when the mine is idle and gets his pleasure in life in caring for his family. Gorius claims to be the record breaking father in Stark County. His oldest child is 25, his youngest, six weeks. Neither twins nor triplets widened the family circle by leaps and bounds. “They came one by one about two years apart,” said Gorius. Six of the children are dead and three are married. One son works and helps support the family. The next to the smallest child refused to be photographed. The picture shows the remaining members with Gorius and his wife. “I wouldn’t take all John D. Rockefeller’s got for my family,” said Gorius. “Children after all are the real riches in life. They give more happiness than anything else. The trouble with people today is they pay too much attention to poodle dogs and not enough to children. The hair of a fancy dog never felt a tenth as good on my cheek as that of my little babies. The babies gave me a thrill no dog and no money in my pocket could give.” Gorius lives modestly. Part of the year the mine where he works is idle and only thrift and strict economy enable the family to stretch the pay envelope around the demands of necessity. But they are a happy healthy family and finances cause little concern. Mrs. Gorius gives her entire time to the family. The older girls play the role of little mother and wash the dishes, cook and care for the little baby. “Pap,” a combination of starch and milk, was the diet on which the children were raised until a year old, and then they were given everything to eat that was on the table,” Mrs. Gorius says.
